Hunted for their fur, koala populations declined drastically between 1888 and 1927, leaving fewer than 300,000. Today, koalas face new threats: they are being hit by cars, attacked by dogs and suffering from diseases that have spread to most of the Earth's remaining population. Compounding the crisis, climate change is amplifying the frequency and intensity of forest fires, forcing the koala to abandon their forest home.
